Regardless of your industry or business size, you should be blogging. The benefits of blogging for your business include:

  • Establish yourself/organization as an industry expert
  • Increase organic search engine ranking
  • Increase web traffic
  • Increase revenue
  • “Free” marketing
  • Word-of-mouth marketing

I’m guessing, by now, you are sold on the benefits of blogging and ready to get started. Here are a few tips to maximize the impact of your blog.

Blog regularly. This does not mean you have to blog daily, although you should post often. If your readers expect you to post every Wednesday, try to have new content available for them every Wednesday. If you don’t have time to maintain your blog and post regularly, hire a professional to do it for you. Blogs that are updated often receive better search engine rankings, which takes us to the next tip.

Search engine optimize (SEO) each post. Each blog post should include relevant keywords and contain at least 300 words. Follow this lesson in SEO 101 from Google.

Call for action. What is your purpose for blogging? Whether you want to sell your visitors something, share your content, hire you, or just leave a comment, you must ask them to do it. Include a call to action in each post.

Share posts with your social network. Always publicize new and old posts among your social networks. Everyone you know should be aware of what you do and encouraged to share your content with their networks.

Add images and alt tags. Images are very important to your blog. They are visually appealing and break up long passages of text. They also allow your posts to be included in image searches, which is why alt tags are so important. Be sure your alt tag includes the keyword for your post.

Include backlinks. Backlinks increase your search engine rankings and also make other bloggers and writers aware of you. When you link to another blog’s post, they receive a ping and are more likely to visit your site and link to your posts in the future. Backlinks are also considered by search engines when ranking.

Add sharing buttons. Make it easy for readers to share your content by adding sharing buttons at the beginning and/or end of each blog post.

Make it easy for readers to subscribe to your blog and follow you on social networks. Include links to your social profiles and a button to subscribe in a highly visible place on your blog. Most people include them at the top, bottom, left, or right of each web page.

Be clear and concise. Don’t try to write about multiple topics in one post. If other subjects or topics need to be discussed, create a new blog post and link readers to them.
